A 60 year old Citizen Smith, Jon Snow and a nonagenarian in a natty hat - welcome to British politics:

Watching the fall out from the election this week, the surprising comeback of a man who's own party tried to see him off only a few months ago, powered by an inexplicable millennial rising. It seems they were after all hacked off enough to leaving their avocado toast on their parents kitchen table and go out and vote for Jezza. To the astoundingly badly managed PR clusterfuck that was Theresa may not meeting the surviving residents of the Grenfell tower fire, explaining that it was a case of security concerns to then be utterly shown up by not only Jeremy Corbyn down there hugging the people to - you couldn't write it- our glorious, victorious, long may she reign over us, 91 year old queen and her eldest grandson and heir to the throne, Wills down there looking genuinely concerned for their subjects. Oh dear Theresa... What I would have paid to be a fly on the wall when she got back to the office and the reaction of the nation stated to become apparent. One can only guess at bollockings Malcom Tucker would have been proud of for her evidently hopelessly out of touch PR team. I mean for Christ sake guys the Queen realised it was boots on the ground time! What were you thinking?!

So as Corbers is on hand to offer support and pose for photo opportunities you couldn't buy, barely having to say a political word because the red-top press in their righteous outrage are doing all the work for him. Lording his common touch and berating the out of touch Tory leader that only days ago they were loudly backing to lead our nation. Ah the British press, nothing if not changeable!

And so, as I sit here with my coffee, watching the Istanbul rain drench the dusty city, I idly wonder are British politics moving away from the right/left of centre, grey area of the last few years where everybody went to the same jolly pricy prep school (if this was a presentation you could expect that lovely picture of BoJo, Dave and Gideon in the 'I always look like this' white tie get up, hanging around louchely on the steps of Christchurch collage like Westminster-side story, or Cleggers sporting that lovely Westminster boys school blazer... I wonder are we moving back towards a time of more defined red and blue again?

I remember hearing a US political commentator say of the last US election, 'It was Hilary's to lose.' Meaning that her win should have been a sure thing, but she misjudged the mood of her nation just as it appears not only May but a great many of us have done, me included.  Not to mention the indefitgable and admirably honest Jon Snow who last week made a wonderful Channel 4 news promo in Which he said simply 'I know nothing, we the media know nothing' basically none of us saw this dogs dinner of a result coming... Fair.

I have to marvel at the wonderful work of news archive staff up and down the country who have diligently dug out clips of that time Boris said there was too much red tape and agreed with cuts to health and safety that are now being blamed for the fire in Grenfel Tower. And all those lovely, grainy clips of Corbers saying the same thing for 30 years, in the same awful jumpers and creased suits. And that time he went up against Margaret Thatcher in the commons, and the in no way subtle undertone of comparing May to her, because well she's a woman too you know and look what happens when we let them lead the country.

If as it appears he has, Corbyn has managed to dissipate the millennial malaise and mobilise the 20 somethings who still live with their parents and won't have to pay three times the council tax, then Christ only knows what is coming.

I suppose I just can't believe that we haven't got something better to offer as a nation than a 60 year old citizen smith  and a leader sadly so out of touch she's just been upstaged by a nonagenarian in a natty hat...
